Dr Irene Papanicolas

Director, Center for Health System Sustainability, Brown University School of Public Health

    Biography

    Dr Irene Papanicolas is Professor of Health Services, Policy, and Practice at Brown University’s School of Public Health and the founding Director of the Center for Health System Sustainability (CHeSS). Her research centers on measuring and comparing health system performance. Dr Papanicolas also leads the International Collaborative on Costs, Outcomes, and Needs in Care (ICCONIC), a consortium of 18 international research partners using patient-level claims data to analyze healthcare costs, outcomes, and resource needs.

    Dr Papanicolas holds degrees in Economics and Public Policy from University College London, Social Policy from the University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Social Policy (Health Economics) from the London School of Economics. She is a former Harkness Fellow (2015-16) and has served as a technical advisor to Ministries of Health, the World Health Organization, the US National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine and the World Bank.
