Niek Klazinga, MD, PhD

Emeritus professor of Social Medicine, Amsterdam UMC

    Biography

    Dr Klazinga has been a professor of Social Medicine at the University Medical Center/University of Amsterdam since 1999 and became an active emeritus in 2024. From 2006 to 2022, he was the strategic lead of the Health Care Quality and Outcomes program at the OECD in Paris, where he currently still functions in an advisory capacity. Over the past 30 years, he has been involved in numerous health services research projects and policy debates on quality of care and health system performance and has published widely on the subject. His research group in Amsterdam is a WHO collaborating centre for quality and equity in primary health care.

    Dr Klanzinga’s previous positions include medical director of the Municipal Public Health Office of the city of Amsterdam, and member of the board of trustees of a teaching hospital (Isala Clinics) and mental health care institute (Arkin). He is currently an advisor to WHO, the European Union, the World Bank, and the Canadian Institute for Health Information. He has co-authored over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and to date completed the supervision of 46 PhD trajectories.
